Do you need to rent a car?

I have had some interesting experiences with car rentals over the years and I figured I would share them first. I have also composed a short list of tips that I suggest for anyone researching car rentals.

A friend's friend had a car rental stolen. Long story short, he ended up having to pay for the car because he had no insurance coverage. He opted out of the insurance coverage that they rental company offered and his insurance did not cover car rentals. Moral of the story, if your car insurance does not have car rental insurance (call them to confirm) than it is a good idea to purchase the insurance that the car rental company offers.

And now for the list:

  1. Price Shop Online!
Your best bet to find a great rate on a car rental is to search online. A simple google search for "discount car rentals" can find you great rates on a car rental. And remember, get creative with your research. It can't hurt to search for "car rental coupon" or "special car rental price".
  2. Weekends are the best bet!
Depending on what your travel plans are like, if you can adjust your schedule at all, it is generally cheaper to rent a car on the weekend. I have witnessed prices dropping as much as 50% from a weekly rate to a weekend rate for the same exact car.
  3. Don't just say NO to the insurance.
If you didn't read the introduction paragraph, think twice about getting the insurance. By renting a car, you are responsible for that car. Check with your current car insurance policy, if it does not cover a rental car, I advise to purchase the car insurance the car rental company will offer. Better safe than sorry.
  4. Airport rentals are convenient, but generally more expensive.
Travelocity reports through a recent study that car rentals at the airport are higher by an average of 11.5%. If possible, check for locations near the airport. Almost every car rental company has a courtesy pickup and drop off so that means they can pick you up at the airport and bring you to the car rental company.
  5. The earlier the booking, the cheaper the car rental.
The best price is generally obtained when you purchase the car rental early. This of course is not always the case, but generally acceptable rule of thumb with travel pricing.
